Class Five
Welcome to Class Five – A Year of Discovery, Adventure and Leadership!
In Year 5, learning becomes an unforgettable adventure! Our journey begins by travelling back in time to explore life with the Vikings and Tudors, then we sail even further into the past to uncover the wonders of Ancient Greece its myths, thinkers and influence on the modern world. But our travels don’t stop in the past.
Geographically, we journey across the globe—navigating maps and mastering compass skills as we explore the Alps, the world’s vast oceans, and the dramatic Mojave Desert.
Our English lessons are inspired by our historical and geographical explorations. From surviving in the Amazon with The Explorer, to life-or-death decisions in
Treason, to battling monsters in Percy Jackson, and unearthing secrets in Holes, children write across a range of genres, fully immersed in the stories and the worlds they inhabit.
In Maths, we take on challenging new concepts head-on! Children explore prime, square and cubed numbers, master multiplication and division with larger numbers, and deepen their understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages. Practical maths comes alive through engaging activities in data handling and statistics, helping learners connect classroom learning to real-life situations.
Science is an adventure of its own in Year 5. We blast off into Space, investigate the properties and changes of materials, and discover the rich diversity of living things and their habitats. We also explore the changes humans go through and uncover the forces that shape our world—literally!
RE in Year 5 is all about exploration and personal growth. Through our Questful RE curriculum, children embark on a meaningful journey of discovery, examining the beliefs, stories and practices of world religions—while always considering their own starting points, questions and perspectives. This approach encourages empathy, reflection, and respectful dialogue, helping children grow not only in knowledge but in their understanding of the diverse world around them.
One of the highlights of Year 5 is taking on the Young Leader’s Award. Children are inspired to “be the change they want to see” by identifying real-world issues and thinking about how they can make a positive difference—at school, in the community, and beyond. This unique programme builds confidence, teamwork, and social awareness—skills for life.
